Türkiye sets up coordination mechanism to aid Syria, hopes for EU sanctions lift

27 January 2025 12:23

Turkish authorities have set up a coordination mechanism to provide urgent aid to Syria, focusing on critical sectors like transportation, energy, and healthcare.

Speaking to a Turkish media outlet, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized the importance of Syria's stability and economic recovery, reiterating Türkiye's commitment to supporting its neighbour, as reported by Caliber.Az.

Fidan expressed hope that the European Union would follow the United States' lead in partially lifting sanctions on Syria. "We hope that, in the coming days, the EU will join the U.S. in easing restrictions. Syria's recovery is vital for us, and our efforts will bring positive results," Fidan stated.

The coordination mechanism is designed to streamline Türkiye's assistance to Syria, a country that has been grappling with years of conflict. Türkiye views Syria as a crucial partner, with shared cultural and historical ties, and considers its stability essential for regional security.

Fidan also addressed the ongoing challenges in Syria, particularly the presence of various armed groups. He called for the formation of an inclusive government and the preservation of Syria's territorial integrity. "We have instructed groups close to Türkiye, totaling around 80,000 individuals, to join the national army and prevent any disturbances," he added, stressing the need for unity and order within the country.

Türkiye's stance on Syria aligns with its broader geopolitical goals in the region, aiming to restore stability and foster economic development. With the creation of the coordination mechanism, Türkiye is poised to play a pivotal role in Syria's recovery, working both independently and in collaboration with international partners.
