Two dead, 20 injured due to snow, ice storm in northern France
Authorities in northern France reported that two people have died and 20 others have been injured as a cold snap, bringing snow and ice, affected the region and much of northern Europe.
One of the victims slipped on a pavement and struck their head severely, according to officials from the Nord region. The other deceased individual, who was homeless, was found dead in the town of Valenciennes, the statement noted, Caliber.Az reports citing French media.
The severe weather, which began on January 8, prompted rescue services to respond to numerous incidents, including traffic accidents, falls on icy surfaces, flooding, and other emergencies.
Meanwhile, across the English Channel in the UK, weather warnings were issued, with temperatures expected to drop as low as -16 degrees Celsius (3.2 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas later on January 9.
In the UK, Manchester Airport temporarily closed its runways due to heavy snow before reopening. The Met Office, the country’s weather service, cautioned of further disruptions to road and rail travel and potential accidents in icy areas. Snow and ice warnings were also in effect for northern Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The extended spell of snow, sleet, and rain has caused widespread disruption, affecting airports, rail services, and roads across the country, leading to delays and cancellations during the busy holiday period.
