Britain advises its citizens to refrain from visiting Armenian-Azerbaijani border area

22 January 2025 13:55

The British government has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to avoid visiting the border areas between Armenia and Azerbaijan due to ongoing tensions between the two nations.

UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has advised against all travel to within 5km of the entire eastern border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports.

To recall, the 11th meeting of the State Commission on the Delimitation of the State Border between Azerbaijan and Armenia took place on January 16, 2025. Co-chaired by Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev and Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan, the meeting focused on progressing the delimitation of the shared border, a sensitive issue stemming from the decades-long conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The border delimitation process, which formally began on April 23, 2024, with the installation of border markers, aims to clearly demarcate the international borders between the two countries, starting from the northern section near the junction with Georgia and continuing southward to the border with Iran. Armenia has also agreed to vacate four Azerbaijani border villages it occupied during the 1990s, after the devastating war over Nagorno-Karabakh.

The two sides discussed the procedures for the delimitation process and set plans to meet again to continue their work. This ongoing cooperation follows the signing of a joint regulation on August 30, 2024, which laid the framework for the efforts.

These talks are part of broader peace-building measures following the 2020 ceasefire that ended the latest conflict over Karabakh, with the aim of ensuring long-term stability and clarity in the region.
