UK intercepts Russian “shadow fleet” tanker in English Channel
British forces have intercepted a Russian “shadow fleet” tanker attempting to pass through the English Channel, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a post on X.
Starmer stated that he personally ordered the Armed Forces to stop the vessel, describing the operation as “yet another blow to Russia” over its war in Ukraine.
“This successful operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Putin's war in Ukraine that we will not let them hide,” he wrote, adding thanks to the Armed Forces and law enforcement personnel “who keep this country safe 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
In the early hours of this morning, I directed our Armed Forces to intercept a shadow fleet oil tanker attempting to pass through the English Channel.

The Russian "shadow fleet" (also called dark fleet) refers to a clandestine network of hundreds of mostly ageing oil tankers used by Russia to transport crude oil and petroleum products while evading Western sanctions, particularly the G7/EU price cap imposed after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
These vessels typically employ opaque ownership structures, flags of convenience, frequent name/flag changes, AIS spoofing or disabling, and non-Western (or absent) insurance to bypass restrictions and continue generating revenue for Russia.
Many are older ships posing environmental risks due to poor maintenance, and the fleet has grown significantly, with estimates ranging from several hundred to over a thousand vessels involved in sanctions circumvention.
