UK launches “Atlantic Bastion” programme to counter Russian undersea threats
The UK has announced progress on its new Atlantic Bastion defence programme, an initiative designed to strengthen Britain’s security in the North Atlantic amid rising concerns over Russian submarine activity.
The programme will integrate autonomous vessels, artificial intelligence, warships and aircraft to create an advanced hybrid force aimed at protecting critical undersea infrastructure, including communication cables and energy pipelines, according to UK government.
According to the Ministry of Defence, strong interest from British industry in developing the required high-tech systems is expected to support new defence-sector jobs across the country.
Officials say the initiative is a direct response to increased Russian submarine operations, including the recent presence of the Russian spy ship Yantar near UK waters—activity publicly highlighted by the Defence Secretary. UK Defence Intelligence has also assessed that President Vladimir Putin is modernising Russia’s submarine fleet with the capability to target undersea assets vital to Western economies.
Atlantic Bastion is intended to enhance the UK’s and NATO’s ability to detect, track and, if necessary, counter hostile underwater activity across large ocean areas.
