Ukraine approves ratification of Rome Statute Enhancing ICC jurisdiction
21 August 2024 17:53
The Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine has officially ratified the Rome Statute, a significant step in strengthening the country’s commitment to international justice.
Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak announced on Telegram that the measure received broad support in Parliament, with 281 votes in favor, Caliber.Az reports.
Ukraine signed the Rome Statute in 2000, but until now, it had not been ratified. The ratification means that the International Criminal Court (ICC) will gain jurisdiction over genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity committed on Ukrainian soil.
This move is expected to enhance Ukraine's legal framework for addressing severe international crimes and aligning more closely with global justice standards.
