Ukraine begins drafting security pact following high-stakes summit in Washington
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that detailed work is now underway to formulate robust security guarantees for Ukraine, following a series of high-level discussions with US and European leaders in Washington.
In a message published via his official Telegram channel, Zelenskyy described the recent negotiations as a pivotal development in Ukraine’s broader effort to secure a lasting peace and ensure national stability in the face of ongoing Russian aggression, Caliber.Az reports.
“Yesterday, important negotiations took place in Washington with the President of the United States and European leaders. This marks a truly significant step toward ending the war and ensuring the security of Ukraine and our people,” Zelenskyy wrote.
“We are already working on the specific content of the security guarantees.”
The Ukrainian leader emphasized that coordination on the issue is progressing “at the level of leaders,” and that the groundwork is being laid for future discussions in agreed formats. He further noted that national security advisers from participating countries remain in close and continuous contact to align strategic approaches and policy frameworks.
A high-stakes meeting at the White House between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders on August 18 produced cautious steps toward future negotiations with Russia and fresh debate over Ukraine’s security guarantees.
The talks were described by European officials as markedly friendlier than Zelenskyy’s last visit to Washington. Zelenskyy said afterward that they had “very good talks” on “sensitive matters including security guarantees,” and declared he was ready to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin bilaterally.
