Ukraine claims drone strike damages Russian submarine in Novorossiysk
Ukrainian security forces have reportedly struck a Russian submarine in Novorossiysk, according to local media citing Ukrainian sources.
For the first time in history, underwater drones known as Sub Sea Baby are said to have detonated a Russian Project 636.3 "Varshavyanka" submarine (NATO designation: Kilo).
The explosion caused critical damage, effectively putting the vessel out of service, the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) stated.
The submarine was reportedly carrying four Kalibr cruise missile launchers at the time of the attack.
The cost of a Varshavyanka-class submarine is estimated at around $400 million, though analysts warn that international sanctions could push the cost of constructing a replacement vessel to as much as $500 million.
