Ukraine foils Russian espionage plot targeting Odessa’s power grid PHOTO
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has arrested a 48-year-old local woman in Odessa suspected of espionage on behalf of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB).
Authorities allege that she was recruited to relay the coordinates of the city’s energy infrastructure, facilitating potential missile and drone strikes.
According to the SBU, the woman’s primary task involved identifying and transmitting the locations of transformer substations and high-voltage facilities critical to Odessa’s power supply.
Investigators report that, lured by promises of “easy earnings,” the suspect moved around the city using public transport, photographing strategic sites and surveying their perimeters to assess the impact of prior attacks.
The intelligence she gathered was transmitted via messenger to her FSB handler, accompanied by annotated photographs on maps and detailed reports on the progress of ongoing repair work. Her apprehension occurred at her residence while she was preparing yet another “report.”
During the subsequent searches, authorities confiscated two mobile phones, which had been used to aggregate sensitive information and sustain communication with her Russian handlers.
The investigation has formally classified her actions as high treason committed under martial law. She remains in custody and faces life imprisonment with the confiscation of all property.
