Ukraine security service says it prevented Kharkiv bombing plot PHOTO
Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has prevented a series of planned terrorist attacks in Kharkiv and detained an FSB agent accused of preparing explosions in the frontline city.
It said the suspect received instructions from Russia to manufacture two improvised explosive devices (IEDs), Caliber.Az reports, citing the agency.
The devices were to be built using 12 kilograms of explosive material, which he was instructed to produce himself, and equipped with mobile phones for remote detonation.
The suspect allegedly planned to place the explosives in central Kharkiv and then report back to his FSB handler. Russian operatives reportedly intended to detonate the devices during rush hour, when large numbers of civilians would be present in the streets.
SBU counterintelligence made it clear that the plot was uncovered in advance, and the suspect was detained “in the act” at a rented apartment while on a video call with a Russian intelligence officer who was instructing him on bomb-making.
According to investigators, the man involved is an unemployed resident of the Kirovohrad region who came to the attention of Russian intelligence while searching for “easy earnings” in Telegram channels.
During searches, officers reportedly seized more than 12 kilograms of explosives, additional components for IEDs, and multiple mobile phones used to conceal communications with the FSB.
The suspect is currently in custody without bail and faces up to 12 years in prison with asset confiscation.
