Ukraine urges UN Security Council to adopt immediate ceasefire resolution
Ukraine has called on the United Nations Security Council to urgently adopt a resolution demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, arguing that such a move would help overcome what it described as the body’s prolonged paralysis linked to Russia’s actions.
Speaking at a Security Council meeting, Ukraine’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Volodymyr Pavlychenko, urged member states to take decisive and immediate steps.
"The paralysis of the UN Security Council on the issue of Russia’s crimes must be stopped by the international community, which still respects the rules-based international order. Therefore, we again call on Security Council members to immediately introduce a draft resolution on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire," he said.
Pavlychenko described the proposed resolution as a test of the international community’s intentions, saying it would serve as a "litmus test" of member states’ positions and "will clearly demonstrate support for restoring a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine."
He also stressed the importance of continued military assistance to Kyiv, saying Ukraine requires sustained support to ensure its survival and calling on partners to maintain supplies of equipment and ammunition.
"This is not escalation, but the only effective strategy for restoring peace and saving lives," he added.
The Security Council has frequently been unable to take action on the conflict due to Russia’s veto power as a permanent member. Ukraine has been seeking ways to overcome this constraint.
The meeting was convened following a series of large-scale Russian attacks on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine in recent days.
