UN: Over 100,000 people flee Lebanon for Syria amid conflict
More than 100,000 people have crossed from Lebanon into Syria, following the displacement of over 200,000 people from southern Lebanon due to evacuation orders issued by the Israeli military, said United Nations spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric on October 1.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has cautioned that the number of displaced individuals is likely to increase, as the Israeli Defence Forces continue to issue evacuation orders, including in 30 villages in southern Lebanon, Caliber.Az reports via the UN press service.
These orders were issued between October 1-2, according to Dujarric, the chief spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
In northern Israel, over 60,000 people remain displaced from their homes.
The UN Refugee Agency has ramped up its emergency response, collaborating with partners to provide urgent humanitarian and protection support to those displaced within Lebanon.
Notably, in a statement released on October 2, UN Secretary-General Guterres made an urgent appeal to the international community, requesting support for the $426 million emergency flash humanitarian appeal launched earlier that day in Beirut, Lebanon.
"Our humanitarian colleagues say that this money aims to support 1 million people with humanitarian assistance for the next three months," said Dujarric.
Lebanon’s humanitarian coordinator, Imran Riza, also issued a stark warning, stating that without adequate resources, the humanitarian effort risks "leaving the population of an entire country without the support they urgently need," he added.
