Unexploded World War II-era bomb found near US barracks in Germany
An unexploded World War II-era aerial bomb is set to be defused near Wiesbaden in Germany after being discovered close to US military barracks, Der Spiegel reports.
The 500-kilogram bomb was found during reconnaissance work on Tuesday, May 12, on a service road connecting Federal Highway 455 to the Lucius D. Clay Barracks in the Erbenheim district.
Authorities said the bomb will be either defused or subjected to a controlled detonation at 11:00 a.m. local time (1:00 p.m. in Baku) on May 13.
A security perimeter of 700 meters will be evacuated for the operation. Transport disruptions are expected, including the closure of the Wiesbaden–Cologne railway line and a section of the A66 motorway between Erbenheim and Nordenstadt. Bus services will also be partially affected.
Around 50 residents must leave their homes by 9:00 a.m. local time (11:00 a.m. in Baku). For those unable to stay with relatives or friends, a temporary shelter has been set up in Amöneburg at a Johanniter emergency service station.
