Unlocking health benefits of coffee

25 September 2024 05:02

MBG Health unveils that coffee isn't just a beloved beverage; it's also one of the most significant sources of polyphenols in the world, offering impressive health benefits.

Last year, the Netflix documentary Blue Zones offered insights into the lives of some of the oldest individuals worldwide, spanning locations from the Mediterranean highlands to Central America's coasts. A common thread among these centenarians was their shared love for coffee.

"In Nicoya, Costa Rica; Sardinia, Italy; and Ikaria, Greece, people have the longest life spans statistically, and they all drink coffee," noted Dan Buettner, founder of Blue Zones, in a previous interview with mindbodygreen. The connection between coffee consumption and longevity isn't coincidental. In addition to boosting energy and concentration, coffee has been linked to a reduced risk of premature death from heart disease and cancer.

A study involving nearly 500,000 adults found that consuming up to eight cups of coffee daily (both decaffeinated and caffeinated) was associated with lower mortality rates. Research also suggests that regular coffee consumption may lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes and obesity. So, what accounts for coffee's longevity benefits? For one, caffeine can boost energy levels and decrease fatigue, potentially encouraging more physical activity. It may also accelerate metabolism and enhance fat burning in certain cases.

However, the positive effects of decaf coffee suggest that there are additional health benefits beyond just caffeine. To truly understand coffee's health advantages, it's essential to consider its polyphenols. Polyphenols are remarkable compounds that plants produce naturally. Coffee plants contain thousands of these phytochemicals, which protect them from pests, fungi, and diseases. Interestingly, when we consume coffee, we may inherit some of these protective benefits.

The antioxidant polyphenols in coffee help shield our cells from free radicals and oxidative stress. Each type of polyphenol has distinct properties, and much remains to be discovered about their individual effects. For instance, chlorogenic acid, one of the most extensively researched polyphenols, has been shown to enhance cardiometabolic health and stimulate the central nervous system. Ferulic acid is known to reduce oxidative stress and improve inflammatory conditions, while rosmarinic acid is currently being investigated for its potential protective effects on the liver. Researchers are also interested in other polyphenols, such as coumaric acid for mood enhancement and caffeic acid for its anti-inflammatory properties. Together, these diverse plant compounds create a delightful cup of coffee.

The amount and variety of polyphenols can differ among various coffee products due to factors like roasting methods, storage techniques, and brewing styles. The origin and cultivation methods of the coffee beans also significantly affect their polyphenol content. To maximize the health benefits of your coffee, it's wise to choose a brew that is cultivated and processed to preserve these vital plant compounds. Clean coffee+ is one such blend. Mindbodygreen's new whole-bean coffee is organically grown in nutrient-rich soil and hand-picked at peak ripeness. It is roasted and dried in a way that minimizes mold and mycotoxins—common issues in coffee—while promoting a robust array of native polyphenols that offer antioxidant benefits for overall health. Rigorous testing was conducted to check for heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticides, and solvents, as well as the total polyphenol content.
