US Air Force C-17 makes emergency landing in Türkiye

A United States Air Force transport aircraft carried out an emergency landing in Türkiye after declaring an in-flight emergency, according to a source in air traffic control cited by TASS.

The aircraft, identified as a Boeing C-17A Globemaster III, had taken off from an area near the Greek island of Kos before transmitting a distress signal while flying in Turkish airspace.

“The Boeing C-17A Globemaster III aircraft, which took off near the Greek island of Kos, issued a distress signal while in Turkish airspace and is now landing,” the source said, without specifying the cause of the emergency that required the immediate landing.

The source added that the aircraft first entered service approximately 20 years ago.

The emergency was further corroborated by data from global flight monitoring systems, which recorded the crew transmitting squawk code 7700, a universal signal indicating a general emergency onboard.
