US, allies launch new air defence cell in Qatar
The United States and its regional partners have established a new air and missile defence coordination centre at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar to strengthen the integrated defence system in the Middle East.
The centre, named the Middle Eastern Air Defense – Combined Defense Operations Cell, is based within the Combined Air Operations Centre at Al Udeid. It is staffed by U.S. service members alongside representatives of regional partner countries, Caliber.Az reports, citing U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
“This is a significant step forward in strengthening regional defense cooperation,” CENTCOM Commander U.S. Navy Admiral Brad Cooper said, noting that the new centre will enhance coordination and information-sharing on air and missile defence issues.
The formation of the cell follows the opening of two bilateral combined command posts last year for air and missile defence. The new facilities, opened by the US Army Central in partnership with Qatar and Bahrain, will serve as hubs for integrated air defence planning, coordination and operations.
