Chinese power group planning to build renewable energy island

30 November 2024 20:00

A state-owned Chinese energy giant is leading a technological consortium to create an offshore “integrated energy island” in southern China, which is considered one of the country's most ambitious engineering projects of the year.

On November 22, China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) revealed plans to construct this advanced facility, which will focus on deep-sea renewable energy off the coast of Guangdong province, as reported by China News Services, Caliber.Az reports citing Chinese media.

China has been increasingly turning to the sea as a source of green energy, exploring offshore wind farms, floating solar farms, and other solutions to conserve limited land resources. However, to avoid disrupting vital shipping lanes, ports, and fisheries, it is necessary to push these facilities further into the open ocean.

Researchers in China have been studying the potential for deep-sea integrated energy islands as part of their renewable energy strategy. The planned man-made island will be linked to large offshore wind turbines, generating electricity to support seawater desalination, hydrogen production, and the creation of hydrogen-based fuels. These clean energy products could then be transported back to the mainland.
