US envoy: Ukraine's reconstruction could follow analogy of "Marshall plan"
Ukraine's recovery presents a chance to bring the West together through economic cooperation, much like what occurred after World War II under the "Marshall Plan," US President’s Special Representative Keith Kellogg said.
Speaking during an international conference on Ukraine's recovery in Rome, Kellogg recalled that the US and Europe had previously faced the challenge of rebuilding nations devastated by war, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.
He pointed to the recovery plan that was initiated by the US for the recovery of the European continent following WWII.
"We had a European reconstruction plan. We called it the Marshall Plan. And a stable Western Europe was very important for Americans as well. President Roosevelt invested in reconstruction efforts in the economies of Western European countries. This created an opportunity for the development of economic relations between the US and European countries, which still exist, these relations. The US and Europeans can continue to pursue such a policy in Ukraine as well," he emphasised.
Kellogg also noted that recent agreements between the US and Ukraine on economic partnership, namely the highly publicised minerals deal, and an investment fund for reconstruction highlight their ongoing cooperation, calling it "also a continuation of the Marshall Plan, which led to the strengthening of Europe decades ago."
The fourth Ukraine Recovery Conference in the Italian capital brings together government leaders, international bodies, and private sector representatives to explore immediate and long-term strategies for rebuilding Ukraine.
