US, Indonesia push for deeper economic, defence cooperation in Rubio–Sugiono talks
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has held talks with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono in Washington, reaffirming the two countries' commitment to deepening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
During the meeting, the two sides underscored the importance of promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific, with particular emphasis on strengthening defence and security cooperation, Caliber.Az reports, citing the U.S. Department of State.
They discussed collaborative efforts to uphold freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea, in line with international law.
Secretary Rubio reiterated Washington’s support for the maximum pressure campaign against Iran, aimed at curbing the regime’s capacity to fund terrorism, develop ballistic missiles, and pursue other destabilising activities in the region.
The leaders also addressed bilateral trade issues, including US reciprocal tariffs on Indonesian goods. Secretary Rubio welcomed Jakarta’s steps towards implementing economic reforms, which he said would help forge a fairer and more balanced trading relationship.
In addition, the Secretary expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s cooperation in facilitating the repatriation of its nationals deported from the United States.
Both officials agreed on the importance of advancing the US-Indonesia partnership across multiple sectors.
