US, Iran draft updated Strait of Hormuz deal as indirect talks advance

05 August 2026 16:35

New terms are being prepared between the United States and Iran to revise a preliminary framework agreed in June, with particular attention to provisions governing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a Pakistani official told The National

The source said intermediaries are “currently working on drafting an updated MoU,” referring to the June 17 memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran that outlined conditions for reopening the strategic waterway and launching negotiations on a lasting ceasefire during a 60-day suspension of hostilities.

“Messages are being passed. Indirect talks are in an advanced stage,” the official noted, describing the ongoing discussions over the proposed agreement.

Pakistan has served as a mediator throughout the process, relaying messages between the US and Iran, while Qatar and Oman have also played a role in facilitating communication and conveying proposals between the two sides.
