The United States Army (US) has struck military equipment belonging to unspecified armed groups in eastern Syria. The attack was carried out in self-defence after a US base in the region was shelled.
The Central Command of the US Armed Forces (CENTCOM) made this announcement on its official page on social media platform X, per Caliber.Az.

This morning, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces successfully destroyed several weapon systems in the vicinity of Military Support Site Euphrates that included three…
The US military department stated on December 4 that US forces “successfully destroyed several weapons systems in the area of military stronghold Euphrates (MSS Euphrates).” The strike resulted in the elimination of three truck-mounted multiple rocket launchers (MLRS), a T-64 tank, an armoured personnel carrier, and mortars. According to CENTCOM, these military assets “demonstrated a clear and immediate threat to US and coalition forces.”
In addition, CENTCOM reported that the US military responded with MLRS, armoured personnel carrier, and mortar fire aimed at the US base. However, it is not specified who exactly fired on 3 December at the U.S. forces in Syria, located in the western part of the country. It was also noted that the event is not connected to the ongoing rebel offensive against forces controlled by President Bashar al-Assad in the Aleppo and Idlib provinces.

CENTCOM emphasized that the US mission in Syria “remains unchanged,” with US and coalition forces continuing to focus on the “ultimate defeat of ISIL.”
“Ongoing support to regional partners and operations in Syria are unrelated to recent events in northwest Syria. CENTCOM forces continue to monitor the situation and maintain constant communication with our other forces in the region as the situation evolves,” the US military stated in its release.
Furthermore, prior to this, US Department of Defense representative Major General Pat Ryder addressed the issue during a briefing, stating that the Pentagon is currently working to determine who exactly is responsible for the attack on the US base in Syria.
Ryder also pointed out that pro-Iranian militants have previously attacked US forces in the region, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing tensions in the area.
Around 900 US forces are currently deployed to Syria to support a coalition to defeat ISIS. But Iran-backed militias have repeatedly targeted or tried to attack US troops in the area, which has led to US strikes in response.
Last month, the US military said it attacked targets linked to Iran-backed militias in Deir Ezzor.
