US NATO envoy says peace in Ukraine closer than ever
The United States’ permanent representative to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, has said that peace in Ukraine is nearer than at any point in recent history.
Whitaker indicated that a formal peace agreement between the warring parties will be signed when the time is right, noting that the sides are currently closer to a cessation of hostilities than ever before, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
He also confirmed that US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will formally sign the peace deal at the appropriate moment.
Meanwhile, Whitaker called on the international community to continue providing Ukraine with the necessary support for its self-defence.
Whitaker stated that he anticipates additional pledges for the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, which provides U.S. weapons to Ukraine, will be announced when alliance defence ministers convene in Brussels.
He also told reporters during an online briefing that, so far, allies have committed to purchasing more than $4.5 billion worth of American weapons to meet Ukraine's urgent battlefield requirements through PURL.
