US owes about $2 billion to UN, payment expected by year-end
The United Nations expects the United States, its largest donor, to make an additional payment toward its budget contributions by the end of the year, which could reduce its outstanding debt from about $2 billion to roughly $1.3–$1.4 billion.
The estimate was provided by Chandru Ramanathan, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Acting Controller.
According to Ramanathan, the United States owed approximately $1.5 billion to the UN budget at the beginning of the year, but the current amount has risen to around $2 billion.
“ We're expecting another payment from them, so maybe they'll end the year with $1.3, $1.4; we don't know. We'll have to wait and see,” Ramanathan said.
He added that he hopes the United States will pay off most of its debt this year.
