US prepares to test nuclear delivery systems, Rubio says

13 November 2025 13:12

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has confirmed that the United States plans to conduct tests of nuclear weapons delivery systems.

Speaking to reporters following a meeting of diplomats from the Group of Seven democracies in Canada on November 12, Rubio said Trump’s plan calls for testing delivery systems — the technologies that allow nuclear weapons to be launched from land, air, and sea, Caliber.Az reports, citing The Washington Post.

His remarks follow President Donald Trump’s earlier announcement about the start of nuclear activities, though he did not specify whether he meant explosive testing or broader system evaluations.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright later explained that the tests would not involve nuclear detonations.

Rubio said the move was a perfectly appropriate decision, noting that America’s adversaries are conducting their own tests.

In a separate set of remarks, Rubio voiced optimism that the UN Security Council is nearing agreement on a Gaza resolution that would support the creation of an international security force.

He said Washington had made “good progress” on the text and was working with multiple countries to balance their interests and determine how such a mission should be structured.

Rubio stressed that deploying international forces is essential for ensuring humanitarian access and pushing Hamas back, noting that several states require a UNSC mandate before sending troops.

Meanwhile, he also warned that rising violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank could jeopardise Washington’s efforts to stabilise the situation in Gaza.

Rubio emphasised that the United States would do everything possible to prevent such escalation, though American diplomats acknowledge that a recent spike in extremist settler attacks is alarming and risks triggering a broader crisis.

The US Secretary of State also sharply criticised Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), urging an immediate halt to weapons supplies to the militia.

He warned that the RSF routinely agrees to a humanitarian ceasefire “but they don’t intend to comply with it,” and said action must be taken to cut off the group’s funding and materiel support.

Rubio added that the Trump administration would be open to designating RSF as a foreign terrorist organisation if it would help end the conflict.

Without naming specific states, he said the US would not allow members of the Quad — the US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE — to use the grouping as political cover.

He stressed that Washington knows who continues to provide money to RSF and intends to make clear that such actions will carry consequences.
