US pro-Armenian senator found guilty in major bribery scheme
US Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey has been found guilty on all charges in an extensive plot to trade his political influence to foreign entities and corrupt businessmen for significant sums of cash, a luxury vehicle, and gold bars.
A jury of 12 New Yorkers convicted him on 16 counts, including honest services wire fraud, bribery, and extortion, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.
After the verdict, Menendez remained defiant, informing reporters outside the courthouse that he would appeal. He did not address questions about his potential resignation.
"I have never violated my public oath. I have never been anything but a patriot of my country and for my country," Menendez asserted.
Robert Menendez has had a long and storied career in American politics, serving in the US Senate since 2006. Menendez has been a prominent figure in shaping US foreign policy. However, his career has been marred by legal troubles. In 2015, he faced federal corruption charges.
The latest charges brought against Menendez in September involved allegations of accepting substantial bribes in the form of cash, gold bars, and luxury items from businessmen seeking his political influence.
