US wants to continue talks with Iran despite renewed strikes – WSJ
The United States would like to continue negotiations with Iran in order to reach a final agreement, a source told The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) following the launch of American strikes on Iranian territory.
According to the source, Washington considered Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz “unacceptable and deserved a stern response.”
At the same time, the US official said that Washington still wants to continue talks with Tehran with the aim of reaching a final deal.
The WSJ noted that US officials were caught off guard by Iran’s attacks on commercial vessels, which came amid ongoing negotiations and the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Trump administration had been working to establish a backchannel between the US military and the IRGC, a powerful military and political force in Iran, but the group has been slow to engage, the report added.
