A major fire broke out at a car repair service station in the city of Aktau in western Kazakhstan on the morning of February 6, injuring two people and destroying several vehicles.

The Mangistau Regional Department of Emergency Situations said the fire started at around 9:05 a.m. local time in Microdistrict 29A, about four kilometres from the nearest fire station. The blaze occurred at a two-story auto service facility with five garage bays, Caliber.Az reports via Kazakh media.

Two of the bays were completely engulfed by the fire. Three vehicles inside the building were damaged, including a Mercedes-Benz that suffered extensive damage to its engine compartment and interior. A Mercedes-Benz GL 460 and a Toyota Alphard were completely destroyed. Two additional vehicles, a Mazda 626 and a Toyota Corolla parked outside the facility, were also damaged.

Emergency officials reported that the fire covered an area of approximately 150 square metres, while the total area of the service station is about 600 square metres.

Two people sustained thermal burns and were taken by ambulance to a regional hospital. One of the injured, a 33-year-old citizen of Uzbekistan who worked at the service station, suffered burns over more than 90 per cent of his body and remains in serious condition.

Firefighters managed to contain the blaze by 9:21 a.m. local time, and it was fully extinguished at 10:43 a.m. local time. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
