Vatican’s Ukraine envoy plans Moscow trip for late September

Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Pope Leo XIV’s special envoy for Ukraine and president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, has announced plans to visit Moscow at the end of September.

“We are working [on organizing it]. I hope to go to Moscow and continue our work on the humanitarian front,” Zuppi said during the presentation of the program for celebrations dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi.

The cardinal noted that the details and schedule of the planned visit have yet to be finalized.

Zuppi has previously traveled to Moscow as part of the Vatican’s humanitarian efforts related to the Ukraine conflict.

At the end of August, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, visited Moscow, where he held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and presidential aide Yury Ushakov.
