Washington, Tehran agree to keep ceasefire alive, report says

Washington and Tehran have agreed in principle to extend the 60-day ceasefire reached under the Islamabad Agreement, Anadolu Agency reports.

The current ceasefire is due to expire on August 17. The sources said both the United States and Iran have conveyed their agreement to extend the truce through the Pakistani mediator.

However, discussions over the precise duration of the extension are still underway, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Iran and the United States have not discussed extending their ceasefire, with Tehran maintaining that the truce is no longer in force.

A source cited by the agency said Iran considers the ceasefire void after Washington allegedly violated the memorandum of understanding just 48 hours after it was signed. As a result, the continuation of the truce is not currently on the negotiating agenda.

Instead, discussions are focused on restoring the terms of the memorandum and determining mechanisms for their implementation. However, the source said no tangible progress has been achieved so far.
