WUF13 takes centre stage in Euronews special coverage from Baku PHOTO
Global housing challenges, sustainable urbanisation, and the development of safe cities will be among the main topics at the 13th session of the United Nations World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, according to a report prepared by Euronews.
The report notes that, according to UN-Habitat, more than one billion people worldwide currently live in slums or informal settlements. The organisation warns that, without urgent action, this number could rise to three billion by 2050.
Anna Soave, head of UN-Habitat’s representation in Azerbaijan, said that housing is directly linked to the future of cities, climate resilience, socio-economic wellbeing, and quality of life. She stressed that the forum provides an important platform for governments, mayors, experts, business representatives, and civil society to discuss practical solutions.
The piece highlights that WUF13 represents a significant opportunity for Azerbaijan to engage in global discussions on reconstruction, urban development, and housing policy, while also showcasing its position on the international stage.
Special attention is given to Baku as an appropriate host city for the forum. Thomas Kovári, founding partner of Swiss architecture and urban planning firm SA Partners, noted that Baku combines historical heritage with rapid modernisation and innovative urban development, making it a suitable location for WUF13.
The material also points to reconstruction projects implemented by Azerbaijan, particularly in the Karabakh region, which are attracting international attention.
“What makes Azerbaijan particularly compelling is the wealth of experience it has to share. In the Karabakh region, for example, the country is developing genuine expertise in ‘building back better’ by combining sustainability, affordable housing and smart city principles in one of the world’s most ambitious reconstruction projects,” Kovári added.
Adil Mammadov, executive director of the WUF13 Azerbaijan Operating Company, told the broadcaster that the forum demonstrates international partners’ trust in Azerbaijan and will further strengthen the country’s position as a regional hub for hosting large-scale global events.
The report adds that issues such as social housing, land rights, urban finance, climate resilience, digital urban planning, and public transport integration will also be discussed at WUF13. The Baku forum is expected to become the largest edition in the history of the event.
