Yerevan battles blazes as fires break out in city, landfill
A fire erupted in Yerevan’s Sari Tagh district, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed the incident, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
Multiple firefighting units are actively engaged in containing the grass fire, which is currently being battled on site.
This latest incident follows a fire reported the previous day at Armenia’s largest landfill located in the Nubarashen administrative district. While the landfill fire has been largely subdued, residual smoldering persists, according to Vahe Vardapetyan, acting director of Yerevan New Landfill CJSC.
“We are working to cover the smoldering pockets with soil. If nothing unexpected happens, the fire can be considered completely extinguished by evening,” Vardapetyan said, outlining ongoing efforts to prevent any resurgence.
The Nubarashen landfill fire initially broke out on July 27, affecting an area of approximately 1,000 square meters. Authorities have been vigilant in their response to mitigate environmental and public health risks associated with the landfill blaze.
