Zelenskyy holds talks with NATO chief on security and energy challenges
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has held a phone call with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to discuss security concerns, the country’s energy situation and next steps in cooperation with Western partners.
Writing on Telegram, Zelenskyy stated that the talks focused on the impact of Russian strikes during the winter period, which he said were creating significant challenges for Ukraine.
He told Rutte about a recent attack on an energy facility in Kharkiv that left hundreds of thousands of people without electricity and heating.
The Ukrainian leader said he outlined Kyiv’s current defence needs, with particular emphasis on strengthening air defences.
He highlighted the importance of the PURL programme, which he said was already providing significant assistance, and expressed hope that contributions under the initiative would be increased later this month.
According to Zelenskyy, the two also discussed Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts, including contacts with partners in the United States and Europe, and exchanged views on further steps.
He said Ukraine had made substantial progress and did not intend to slow its efforts, adding that the country “has never been and will never be an obstacle to achieving peace”.
