Zelenskyy, Trump discuss Russian attacks, sanctions, military aid
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation during which they discussed key issues related to the ongoing war in Ukraine and prospects for peace.
In a Telegram post, Zelenskyy emphasised the urgent need to end the conflict and expressed gratitude for efforts aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace, Caliber.Az reports.
During the call, the two leaders coordinated their positions, exchanging assessments of the current situation. Zelenskyy reported that Russian forces have intensified their brutal attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities and communities, underscoring the devastating impact of the conflict.
The discussion also covered sanctions against Russia, with Zelenskyy noting the continued decline of the Russian economy and Moscow’s sensitivity to the threat of further measures. He highlighted that this dynamic, combined with President Trump’s determination, could significantly influence the situation.
Additionally, Zelenskyy outlined ongoing defence cooperation, mentioning commitments from European countries including the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, which have pledged over one billion dollars to support Ukraine with American weapons. He confirmed that cooperation with NATO allies would continue.
The two leaders also addressed bilateral defence ties between Ukraine and the US, with Zelenskyy revealing that Ukraine has prepared a draft agreement on drones, ready for detailed discussion and finalisation. He described this agreement as potentially one of the strongest in their defence partnership.
Zelenskyy concluded by thanking all Americans who support Ukraine’s efforts to protect its people, expressing appreciation to President Trump for his continued backing.
