Kazakhstan has officially launched the UN Year of Volunteers, a major initiative aimed at highlighting the significance of volunteerism and enhancing its role in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in 2026.
The initiative was proposed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, according to Kazakh media.
In a video address to participants of the launch ceremony, President Tokayev emphasised that in the current context of global instability, volunteerism serves as a “powerful creative force.”
He underscored the importance of volunteer activities in fostering social solidarity and cited the national environmental campaign “Taza Kazakhstan” as a successful example of civic engagement.
As part of the initiative, President Tokayev announced the opening of a subregional office of the UN Volunteers Programme in Almaty, aimed at coordinating and promoting volunteer efforts across the region.
The launch ceremony in New York was attended by the President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock. UN Secretary-General António Guterres also extended his warm support for Kazakhstan’s initiative.
Representing Kazakhstan at the event, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development Jaslan Madiev highlighted the country’s commitment to volunteerism and sustainable development goals.
The UN Year of Volunteers in Kazakhstan is expected to mobilise volunteers nationwide, strengthen public engagement, and contribute meaningfully to international development priorities.
