Tunisian Jabeur reaches US Open final shortly after making it through to Wimbledon showdown

    SPORT  09 September 2022 - 15:17

It took just an hour and six minutes for Ons Jabeur, a Tunisian female tennis player, to make it through to the US Open singles final on September 9.

She gave her French rival Caroline Garcia no chance by ending the game 6-1 6-3 in pure dominance. Garcia’s ardent efforts to produce a fightback at the Arthur Ashe Stadium were all in vain as Jebour decisively locked her sight on the second major final in her career.

“It feels amazing,” Jabeur said in her on-court interview after the match. “After Wimbledon, there was a lot of pressure on me.

“I’m really relieved that I can back up my results. The hard-court season started a little bit bad but now I’m very happy that I made the finals here.”

Now, the 28-year-old Tunisian is going to lock horns with the world’s number one Iga Swiatek, who gave no chance to Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka in the second semi-final, 3-6 6-1 6-4, to face off Jebour in the US Open showdown.

In July, Jebour reached the grand slam final at Wimbledon in her maiden major career achievement. The defeat against Alena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in Wimbledon is said to motivate the Tunisian athlete even more about winning the US Open.

Ons Jabeur is a Tunisian professional tennis player. She has been ranked as high as world No. 2 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), achieved on 27 June 2022. Jabeur is the current No. 1 Tunisian player, and the highest-ranked African and Arab tennis player in WTA and ATP rankings history. She has won three singles titles on the WTA Tour, as well as 11 singles titles and one double title on the ITF Women's Circuit.

Jabeur was first introduced to tennis at age three by her mother. She reached two junior major girls' singles finals at the French Open in 2010 and 2011, winning the latter and becoming the first Arab to win a junior major since 1964. After nearly a decade of playing primarily at the ITF level, Jabeur started competing more regularly on the WTA Tour beginning in 2017. She won the Arab Woman of the Year Award in 2019. At the 2020 Australian Open, Jabeur became the first African or Arab woman to reach a major quarterfinal, a feat repeated at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. She became the first African or Arab woman to win a WTA Tour title at the 2021 Birmingham Classic. Jabeur won her biggest title to date at the 2022 Madrid Open, a WTA 1000 event, becoming the first Tunisian and Arab player to win at this level, and reached her first major final at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships.
