Lithuanian MPs propose holding dual citizenship referendum in 2024
27 March 2023 20:42
Sixty Lithuanian MPs have registered a bill to hold a compulsory referendum on legalising dual citizenships on May 12, 2024.
The referendum would take place in conjunction with the presidential election, LRT reports.
Under the proposals, only Lithuanian nationals would be able to claim second citizenship in countries belonging to the European Union, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and NATO.
Lithuania held a referendum on dual citizenship in 2019 but failed to get enough votes to pass. Previously, the Constitutional Court said holding a referendum was the only way the constitution could be changed.
