Lithuania’s opposition leader demands resignation of army commander

The commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Valdemaras Rupšys should resign because of an ethical scandal, said the leader of the opposition parliamentary faction The Union of Democrats "For Lithuania" Saulius Skvernelis.

According to him, it is about media information that the general lived in his son's apartment in Vilnius, receiving funds for its rent from state funds, reports LRT.

"What is surprising is that the commander does not understand where the difference between public and private interests lies. He should resign, this is unequivocal The situation should be assessed by the president [of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda]. We hope for his word, that he will not hide in a corner," Skvernelis noted.

According to media reports, Rupšys received €445 a month in housing allowance. The general himself confirmed the fact of renting his son's apartment but noted that it was not against the rules.

In addition, the Lithuanian Armed Forces noted that the commander has no real estate in Vilnius or its vicinity. LTR emphasizes that the scandal raised more ethical issues, including because of the general's rude answers to journalists.
