South Korea prepares to slap new sanctions against Russia

    WORLD  20 June 2024 - 19:24

The South Korean government has decided to impose additional sanctions against Russia after North Korea and Russia signed a mutual defence treaty involving a mutual pledge to provide immediate military assistance if one of them is attacked.

The agreement, which includes provisions for immediate military support in case of attack, has prompted Seoul to reevaluate its approach to international relations and arms supply, Caliber.Az reports, citing South Korean media.

National Security Advisor Chang Ho-jin condemned the "comprehensive strategic partnership agreement" inked during the summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang. In a press briefing on June 20, Chang expressed grave concern over the pact's implications for regional stability and security.

"Any cooperation that strengthens North Korea's military capabilities violates UN Security Council resolutions and will face international scrutiny and sanctions," Chang asserted, signalling South Korea's intent to take firm action in response.

Amid growing tensions, South Korea announced plans to reconsider its policy on arms support to Ukraine, previously limited to non-lethal aid. "We plan to reassess our stance, which may include the provision of air defence systems to Ukraine," Chang stated, highlighting Ukraine's urgent need for missile defence against Russian air strikes.

In addition to revising its arms export policy, South Korea will impose additional sanctions on four Russian ships, five organizations, and eight individuals involved in illicit weapons and oil transfers with North Korea. The total number of sanctioned items will rise to 1,402, reflecting a strengthened punitive stance against Russia following its actions in Ukraine.

Chang criticized the North Korea-Russia treaty as undermining international norms and responsibilities, particularly given their historical involvement in conflicts like the Korean War and Ukraine crisis. He emphasized South Korea's commitment to enhancing regional security through strengthened alliances with the United States and Japan.

"In coordination with the international community, we will bolster extended deterrence and security cooperation to counter North Korea's nuclear and missile threats," Chang affirmed, underscoring South Korea's resolve to uphold stability amidst escalating regional tensions.

The developments mark a pivotal moment in South Korea's diplomatic strategy, driven by concerns over the security implications of the North Korea-Russia alliance and its potential repercussions on global peace and stability.
