EU Parliament urges immediate retaliatory tariffs against US over trade dispute
The European Union must swiftly impose retaliatory measures against the United States in response to recently enacted U.S. trade tariffs, according to Bernd Lange, Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on International Trade.
“We postponed the first stage of our countermeasures for a while, but I am firmly convinced that they must now be implemented without delay,” Lange said in a statement, Caliber.Az reports, citing Western media.
Lange called for the first package of EU response measures to be activated as early as Monday, July 14. The move signals growing frustration in Brussels over Washington’s unilateral trade decisions, which European officials view as harmful to transatlantic economic ties.
On April 2, 2025, the U.S. implemented a 20% tariff on European imports, which was increased to 30% effective August 1, 2025, following a 90-day negotiation period that failed to yield a deal. Additionally, 25% tariffs on EU steel, aluminum, and cars, and a 10% blanket tariff on all EU imports have been in place since mid-March.
