Ambassador: Russia open to consultations on “Trump Route” in southern Armenia
Sergei Kopyrkin, Russia’s Ambassador to Armenia, has confirmed that Moscow is open to consultations regarding the opening of the “Trump Route” in southern Armenia and its coordination with Iran.
In an interview with the Syunik Yerkir newspaper, Kopyrkin emphasised that one of the consistent priorities of Russia’s foreign policy is to strengthen peace and stability in the South Caucasus. “In line with this principle, we naturally support any efforts aimed at normalising relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” he said.
Regarding the “Trump Route,” the ambassador noted that Russia’s official position will be determined once there is a detailed understanding of how the transport project will be implemented.
“As far as we know, the relevant work is only just beginning. Details regarding cargo and passenger transit regimes, as well as ensuring transportation safety, still need to be agreed upon,” Kopyrkin explained.
He also highlighted that the process of unblocking regional transport communications will need to consider Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union and the presence of Russian border guards on the Armenian-Iranian border, in accordance with bilateral agreements.
Kopyrkin concluded that the Russian side is ready to hold consultations on these issues not only with Armenian partners but also with other interested parties, including Tehran.
