Ancient pyramid uncovered in Kazakhstan sheds light on lost Bronze Age civilisation

08 March 2025 01:10

According to a new article, Brighter Side News features that in a groundbreaking discovery deep in the heart of Kazakhstan’s Karaganda region, archaeologists have unearthed a 3,000-year-old pyramid, offering a remarkable glimpse into the ancient Begazy-Dandibay culture.

Located near the Taldy River in Kazakhstan’s Karaganda region, the Pyramid of Karazhartas has unveiled new insights into the Begazy-Dandibay culture, a society that flourished during the Late Bronze Age. Known for their expertise in metallurgy and animal husbandry, the Begazy-Dandibay people played a key role in regional trade, fueling economic prosperity and empowering a powerful elite class.

Historians and archaeologists believe the pyramid served as a mausoleum for a high-ranking individual. “This is one of the most remarkable monuments of the Begazy-Dandibay culture,” said historian Serhan Cinar, co-leader of the excavation alongside archaeologist Aybar Kasenali. Their team, in collaboration with the Kazakh National Museum, has uncovered evidence linking the structure to the social hierarchy of the time.

The Sary Arka Archaeological Expedition of Karaganda University has revealed the pyramid’s unique square design and step-like layers, measuring 65 feet by 98 feet, making it one of the largest burial structures of its kind. Though only 5 feet tall, the pyramid’s scale and careful construction reflect the importance of the individual it was meant to honor.

Inside, archaeologists found a sarcophagus containing the skull of a local ruler, bronze artifacts, pottery fragments, and animal bones, suggesting ceremonial rituals. Dating back to the 15th-14th centuries B.C., the pyramid is firmly placed within the Late Bronze Age.

In addition to the pyramid, the team discovered the remnants of a proto-city, Kent, which offers further insights into the urbanization of the Begazy-Dandibay culture. Kent, with its organized streets and defensive walls, highlights the advanced nature of this ancient society.

As researchers continue their work, the discoveries at the Pyramid of Karazhartas promise to deepen our understanding of this fascinating civilization and its place in Central Asia’s ancient history.
