Armenia behaving like offended teenager Expert on Zangezur corridor

10 October 2024 09:57

Armenia is taking a highly destructive approach in its handling of the communication routes through the Syunik (Zangezur) region, according to Armenian expert Vahe Hovhannisyan.

Speaking with Armenian journalists, Hovhannisyan, a member of the "Alternative Projects" group, voiced concerns about the country's lack of strategic vision, Caliber.Az reports.

Hovhannisyan emphasized that Armenia has failed to present well-calculated, pragmatic solutions that it could promote on the international stage to gain support.

"The destructiveness lies in the fact that Armenia does not formulate its calculated, competent options for a solution, which it will try to promote in the international arena and thus gain allies. This is an issue that we will not solve without external support. After the war, we do not have the weight and opportunity to solve it on our own in a way that suits us. Azerbaijan has this resource," Hovhannisyan said.

The expert argued that Armenia must now calculate the limits of its potential compromises and find allies to support beneficial options.

"We are not doing that. Instead, we are behaving like an offended teenager, rejecting everyone, which creates an explosive situation in the region—and it's our fault," he added.

Hovhannisyan also warned that Armenia is playing a dangerous game with what he called "Aliyev's patience," a reference to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's approach. He compared Armenia’s current stance to its pre-war period when aggressive and unjustified rhetoric led to conflict.

"We are repeating the same mistakes. A situation will arise where regional powers will resolve this issue without us, as they will conclude that Armenia, with its destructive behaviour, does not understand its interests or the realities of the situation," Hovhannisyan explained.

He pointed to recent developments in Moscow as evidence, stating that Armenia’s "Crossroad of Peace" initiative has been dismissed by both Azerbaijan and Russia. "They say it’s a good idea, but in reality, it is seen as a source of conflict, not peace," Hovhannisyan concluded.
