Armenia braces for possible new Russian sanctions after EU visit
Armenia is bracing for the possibility of new Russian sanctions, with discussions underway in several government circles following the visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, according to reports circulating in Armenian media, cited by Caliber.Az.
Сoncerns have intensified ahead of the European delegation’s visit on July 1–2, which will also include European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.
According to the reports, the visit is being interpreted as a political signal of support for Armenia’s authorities after recent parliamentary elections. Similar gestures in the past were followed by retaliatory measures from Moscow, particularly in the form of export restrictions.
The same sources now expect that Russia could introduce a second major package of sanctions after von der Leyen’s visit.
Analysts and officials cited in the reports stress that any new restrictions would likely have the greatest impact on Armenia’s business sector and broader economy.
