Armenia pinning hopes on German mediation European analyst says

13 April 2024 10:17

European analyst Susan Stewart in a conversation with Armenian media has said that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is pinning hopes on German mediation.

"Pashinyan's call to Germany shows that the trilateral meeting held in Brussels only touched on Western relations with Armenia and perhaps indirectly indicated that the US and EU are unable to mediate efforts because of Baku's position. Against this background, he felt it was significant that the State Department constantly reminded of the readiness for mediation efforts, meaning that there was likely no consensus on this issue on either side," Stewart noted, Caliber.Az reports.

"This is a topic of a separate conversation, why, there are a number of reasons. However, against the backdrop of all this, the call to Germany means that the Armenian side may be pinning hopes on German mediation.

There has been no negative stance on Germany's mediation efforts, so there is likely an expectation that Germany will be more active and initiate another meeting," the analyst said.

However, she also believes that Germany's concern over the Ukrainian events is quite high, so it is unlikely that the German Chancellor will be consistently engaged in the Armenia-Azerbaijan negotiation process.

“In my opinion, Chancellor Scholz's initiative at the Munich Security Conference was a manifestation of the will of the West. And I do not think that Germany has the idea and desire to mediate this conflict, especially since it is extremely complex and the content is unknown to Germany. On the other hand, the anxiety of the Armenian side is also understandable, as the negotiation process has reached a deadlock, there are no mediators, which makes the regional situation even more fragile," Stewart added.
