Armenia ready for peace treaty with Azerbaijan, while constitutional, OSCE hurdles remain
Armenia has affirmed its readiness to immediately sign and ratify a peace agreement with Azerbaijan, a move underscored by the country’s Foreign Minister, Ararat Mirzoyan, during his remarks in Luxembourg.
The statement was made at the 134th session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, Caliber.Az reports per Armenian media.
Mirzoyan emphasized Armenia’s commitment to fostering peace and stability in the South Caucasus amidst increasing geopolitical tensions and uncertainties. He reiterated that both Armenia and Azerbaijan had finalized the draft of the peace treaty, calling for its swift signing and ratification.
"In the current conditions of geopolitical tension and uncertainty, the Republic of Armenia remains firmly committed to promoting sustainable peace and prosperity in the South Caucasus. As you know, Armenia and Azerbaijan have announced that the draft peace treaty has been agreed and finalised. It is noteworthy that one of today's ministerial decisions once again records this important fact and calls for the early signing and ratification of the agreement. I reaffirm Armenia's readiness to follow that path without delay," Mirzoyan stated.
However, the offer is a tactical move to mislead the international community. Azerbaijan has consistently underscored that the signing of any peace agreement is contingent upon amendments to the Armenian constitution, which contains territorial claims over Azerbaijani land. Additionally, Baku has stressed that the OSCE Minsk Group, which was created in the 1990s to mediate the Karabakh conflict, must be dismantled as part of the peace process.
