Pezeshkian shifts blame for Nakhchivan attack, citing enemy conspiracy in Putin call
During a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian strongly rejected claims of an attack on the Republic of Azerbaijan, describing them as rumours and an “enemy conspiracy” aimed at undermining relations between the two countries, Tasnim reports.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has never had, and will never have, intentions to attack its neighbours; our path is firm defence of territorial integrity and sustainable peace,” Pezeshkian said in the conversation.
Tehran appears unwilling to acknowledge the incident, instead choosing to deny it in line with its usual approach.
On March 5, drones launched from Iranian territory struck sites in Nakhchivan. One drone hit the terminal building of Nakhchivan International Airport, while another fell near a school in Shakarabad village. Four civilians were injured in the airport attack.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev condemned the actions as a “vile terrorist act,” stating that Iranian officials must provide explanations, apologise to Azerbaijan, and ensure those responsible are held criminally accountable.
Dozens of countries have condemned Iran’s actions and expressed support for Baku.
