Georgia’s skies overflow as air traffic surges amid Middle East tensions
07 March 2026 10:21
The airspace over Georgia has become one of the busiest transit routes between Europe and Asia following the closure of airspace over several Middle Eastern countries due to escalating military tensions, reports EADaily.
Transit flights and revenues for the country’s aviation services have sharply increased. Airlines operating between Europe and Asia are forced to reroute around restricted airspace in countries including Iran, Iraq, Israel, and various Gulf states.
Previously, an average of around 642 aircraft crossed Georgian airspace daily; the current number has reached a record 1,500–2,000 flights per day.
Airlines pay navigation fees to the state aviation service Sakaeronavigation for using Georgian airspace.
