Iranian military signals readiness as US considers Hormuz escorts
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it is awaiting the arrival of US naval forces expected to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route where shipping has been disrupted amid the ongoing conflict in the region.
According to France 24, the comments were made by Ali Mohammad Naeini, a spokesperson for the Iranian military force.
“We are waiting for their arrival,” Naeini said after the United States energy secretary announced that the United States Navy is preparing to escort ships through the strait “as soon as it becomes feasible.”
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically vital waterway through which a large share of global oil shipments normally pass, but maritime traffic has become increasingly difficult due to the war in the region.
Naeini also issued a warning to Washington, urging US officials to remember earlier incidents involving tanker attacks in the area.
“We recommend that the Americans, before making any decisions, recall the fire on the American supertanker Bridgeton (supertanker) in 1987 and the recent attacks on oil tankers,” he said.
