Armenia refrains from supporting clause on Ukraine in "Summit for Democracy" declaration

30 March 2023 13:41

Armenian authorities have decided to refrain from adopting a clause on the situation in Ukraine in the declaration of the “Summit for Democracy”.

As stated on the website of the Armenian government, in their opinion, the clause does not cover all conflicts and crises.

“Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan took part in the plenary session of the Second Summit for Democracy, which is being held via videoconference. The summit was initiated by US President Joe Biden. As a result of the plenary session, a Declaration was adopted, to which the Republic of Armenia acceded with a reservation,” the press service of the government said in a statement, according to Kommersant.

The text of the declaration is published on the website of the US State Department. The document says that the summit participants condemn the humanitarian consequences of Russia's war against Ukraine, and also demand the immediate withdrawal of troops from the country's territory.

Furthermore, the summit participants support bringing the perpetrators to justice for "the most serious crimes under international law committed on the territory of Ukraine."

In addition to Armenia, India and Mexico joined with reservations or abandoned this clause. In total, the document was signed by representatives of 73 countries.

From March 28 to March 30, the “Summit for Democracy” is being held, organized by the US administration. The leaders of the countries of Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America take part in the event.
