Armenia signals readiness to ease railway communication with Azerbaijan
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced that Armenia is prepared to further simplify the railway communication regime with Azerbaijan on a reciprocal basis.
His remarks came during a briefing where he addressed key issues related to regional transport links and the peace process with Baku, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.
Pashinyan stated that the opening of the railway to Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic follows the same logic as the railway route through Iran. He indicated that Yerevan remains committed to facilitating regional connectivity and transport cooperation.
Commenting on the latest peace proposals received from official Baku, Pashinyan noted that the process is making progress. “The fact that we have received the 12th draft of the peace agreement shows that the process has not reached a deadlock. This means that we now need to present our proposals—the process is ongoing. On the other hand, it should be noted that the border delimitation commissions are also working. This year, they have already met once in person and once online. We have proposed a solution to the issue, which is very important to acknowledge, and we hope that Azerbaijan will respond positively to this proposal,” he explained.
The prime minister elaborated that the proposal includes the restoration of railway communication between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which would also facilitate transport between Western Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan through Armenia’s sovereign territory.
"Both countries will have the opportunity to use the railways passing through their territories for international freight transportation," Pashinyan added.
